Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation
of Swallowing
We are proud to be the ONLY mobile FEES provider in the state of Wyoming!
The FEES is a portable procedure used to assess swallow function that can be completed in an outpatient clinic or at the bedside by passing an endoscope transnasally. A speech-language pathologist conducts FEES by administering a variety of food and liquids while evaluating swallow function using the video capabilities of the nasal scope.
We offer FEES at our Sheridan office & we contract with multiple facilities across Wyoming & Montana to bring FEES directly to your patients!
Why Choose FEES?
Cost Saving
-
FEES reduces costs for your facility by eliminating the need to transport patients, decreasing readmission rates by getting an accurate diagnosis the first time, and reducing the need for treatment of aspiration pneumonia.
More Accurate Diagnosis/Treatment Plan
-
Instead of using signs/symptoms to diagnose dysphagia, the FEES directly visualizes the swallow, giving a more accurate picture of the patient’s abilities. This aids in determining diet recommendations and treatment strategies that are tailored specifically to the patient, ensuring they aren’t put on modified diets and thickened liquid unnecessarily.
-
Reassesment with FEES is easy- monitoring a patient’s progress and limiting the amount of time they are on modified diets.
Mobile service
-
A FEES can be completed at the bedside, in an outpatient setting, in a nursing home, or in a patient’s home! This portability ensures all patients have access to instrumental swallow evaluations.
Minimally Invasive
-
FEES eliminates the need for exposure to radiation and contrast material that are required in a traditional modified barium swallow study.
Can be used with medically complex patients
-
Due to its portable nature, a FEES can be performed on patients in the ICU or that aren’t stable enough for transport to radiology for a modified barium swallow study.
Biofeedback with immediate results
-
Results from a FEES are viewed in real time and can be used to guide the patient through therapeutic maneuvers. This biofeedback allows patients to see what is going on while swallowing and promotes better understanding and compliance with recommendations.
